GORDON & HOLMES SUPPORTS TENDER LOVING CANINES ASSISTANCE DOGS WITH $30,000 DONATION THROUGH TECH SERGEANT JACK KUSHNER FOUNDATION GRANT

SAN DIEGO — April 9, 2013 — The San Diego law firm of Gordon & Holmes has announced its support for the Tender Loving Canines Assistance Dogs (TLCD), donating time to organize and facilitate a $30,000 donation from the Tech Sergeant Jack Kushner Foundation. Kushner is the late uncle of Gordon & Holmes partner Frederic L. Gordon.

By receiving a grant from the Tech Sergeant Jack Kushner Foundation grant, TLCAD has been able to open its first training center named The Spirit in his Kushner’s honor. TLCAD originated in 1998 as a non-profit corporation, training Service Dogs for those with limited abilities in San Diego County. It presently has two focus programs —  At Ease Service Dog program places custom trained dogs for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI) and/or mobility issues for both active duty and military veterans, and the Leash-On-Life program places Service Dogs for individuals on the autism spectrum, including military families. TLCAD places dogs at no charge to their clients.

“The Tech Sergeant Jack Kushner Foundation’s continuing impact in helping fellow active military and veterans will transform many lives of individuals, their families and their communities with the placement of custom trained Service Dogs,” said Karen Schultz, president of TLCAD. “The opening of The Spirit has allowed TLCAD to use its time more efficiently; train more trainers and clients, and initiate new programs to help the military needs in our area. The remaining part of this donation goes toward the expenses of training our dogs. The Tech Sergeant Jack Kushner Foundation’s gift to TLCAD has been a remarkable one for the future impact on military lives in San Diego County.”

“Gordon & Holmes, through out association with the Tech Sergeant Jack Kushner Foundation, is proud to assist organizations like TLCAD in providing support for our wounded veterans,” said Frederic L. Gordon.

GORDON & HOLMES DONATION TO CALIFORNIA WESTERN SCHOOL OF LAW CREATES TRIAL TEAMS PROGRAM AND ORAL ADVOCACY ENDOWED STUDENT AWARD

SAN DIEGO — November 28, 2012 — Fred Gordon and Rhonda Holmes, partners in the San Diego based law firm of Gordon & Holmes, have donated $200,000 to California Western School of Law. As renowned trial attorneys with more than 50 years of combined experience, Mr. Gordon and Ms. Holmes directed their support to a program that mirrors their own strengths — The California Western Trial Teams.

The California Western Trial Teams are led by Mario Conte, a Distinguished Professor and former Executive Director of Federal Defenders of San Diego. In addition to providing general support for the Trial Teams, Gordon & Holmes created an endowed student award. The Gordon & Holmes Oral Advocacy Award will annually benefit a student or multiple students who demonstrate the highest level of trial skills. Gordon & Holmes see this as a way to help the future generation of great trial attorneys.

“We determined that a donation to California Western School of Law would be instrumental in educating law students – as best as a law school can – on what life is like in the real world in terms of developing the oral advocacy and trial presentation skills necessary to build rewarding legal careers,” said Fred Gordon, a 1981 graduate of California Western School of Law.

The law firm’s gift to the California Western is the outcome of a class action settlement with U.S. Smokeless Tobacco, which was settled, by Gordon & Holmes and other California attorneys in 2009 for $102 million. A total of $3.45 million was distributed to San Diego legal societies, organizations and charities as part of $40 million in cy pre awards in the case.

Since Gordon’s student days, American law schools have developed a greater focus on practical legal education. “California Western helps lead the way, with an emphasis on ethics and skill building through hands-on programs such as the trial teams, which teach civility, professionalism, and the ability to think on one’s feet,” said Gordon.
